Australia and Bali Join Forces to Promote Sustainability in Tourism and Hospitality

DENPASAR – In a joint effort to advance environmentally conscious tourism, the Australian Consulate-General in Bali collaborated with the Bali Tourism Office and local environmental NGO PlastikDetox Bali to host an insightful panel discussion and networking event titled “Sustainable Practices in Tourism and Hospitality” on Thursday, 19 June 2025.
Held in Denpasar, the event brought together experts and stakeholders from both Australia and Indonesia to share knowledge and practical strategies for embedding sustainability into the tourism and hospitality sectors. The panel featured distinguished speakers including Ms. Kirana Agustina, Indonesia Chapter Manager of the Indo-Pacific Plastics Innovation Network (CSIRO); Mr. Handoko Rama, Chief Operating Officer of R.O.L.E Foundation; and Ms. Amanda Marcella, Director of Sustainability at Potato Head Bali. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Anna Sutanto, an Australian alumna and co-founder of PlastikDetox Bali.
In her opening remarks, Australia’s Consul-General in Bali, Jo Stevens, emphasized the shared commitment between Australia and Indonesia in building a sustainable future.
“We are here today to share experiences and practical ideas about embedding sustainable practices in the tourism and hospitality industry, drawing on expertise from both countries,” said Ms. Stevens.
“Our two countries are close partners and friends, and our cooperation spans every sector.”
Head of the Bali Tourism Office, Dr. Drs. I Wayan Sumarajaya, M.Si, also praised the initiative, stating:
“We greatly appreciate this activity, because it demonstrates the Australian Government’s care and support for sustainable tourism in Bali.”
The event was attended by around 80 participants, including students and faculty from Bali’s leading tourism and hospitality institutions, as well as members of the Bali Tourism Board, Bali Hotels Association, and the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Bali.
The gathering not only encouraged dialogue and collaboration but also underscored the importance of integrating sustainable practices into the future of tourism in Bali and beyond. (Ray/tim)
